Epi 79 Gabriel Lopes
Bio:
Gabriel Lopes was born in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro in 1978. Son of an organist, he became interested in music from an early age. At the age of 10 he began to study guitar. He began to study percussion at 18 and at 21 began his career as a professional musician.
Gabriel started gigging as a percussionist in samba groups playing at parties accompanying DJs. At that time it was becoming popular for DJs, percussionist and other artists to play together. During this time he played with Luiza Possi, Jar de Oliveira, Fernanda Porto, DJ Patife, DJ Marcelinho da lua and DJ Negralha.
In 2001 Gabriel was invited to play with Monobloco which became one of the largest blocos in Rio de Janeiro. He is still with monobloco as a performer and teacher. Since he has been with Monobloco they have released 4 albums, 2 DVDs and have done extensive world tours, as well as paraded in the streets of Rio, São Paulo and Belo Horizonte during carnaval.
In 2001, friend Emerson Sperandio introduced him to the singer/songwriter Taigo Mocotó, who would become a lifelong musical partner. They have collaborated on several projects together recording and performing and have won awards in Spain.
Gabriel created bloco Volta Alice in 2005 where he is the mestre de bateria and paraded in front of thousands of people in carnaval every year. Through Volta Alice and Monobloco he actively participates in teh renaissance of rio’s street carnaval since the early 2000s.
Gabriel teaches pandeiro lessons online and in person, utilizing his own method.
He is also a music producer creating the soundtracks for Canal Futura, Chiclete Adam’s, Reserva e Enjoy.
